A sheltered oasis, clustered around a waterhole and set in the pristine calm of its own private reserve, Sweetwaters Tented Camp is in a class of its own. Abounding with wildlife, unfettered by the more rigorous strictures of the Kenyan National Parks and designed to offer a charming blend of under canvas ambiance and uncompromising luxury, it has long been the preferred retreat of wilderness and safari lovers alike.

One of only four private game reserves in Kenya, Sweetwaters excels in the provision of privileged seclusion and private game viewing. Thanks to its private status it also allows such unforgettable pleasures as night game drives, guided bush walks and both horse or camel riding across its game-teaming plains.

DAY 4: SWEETWATERS-SAMBURU.

Breakfast at the Sweetwaters Tented Camp, followed by a farewell drive further north to Samburu game reserve. Game drive en route to your lodge. Check in at Samburu lodge, followed by an early lunch. It’s a siesta before an introductory afternoon game drive. Dinner and overnight at the Accommodation: SAMBURU LODGE.

Situated on the fertile banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, in the centre of the Samburu Game Reserve in Kenya’s rugged, semi-arid Northern Province, Samburu  Safari Lodge echoes the robust rhythms of riverfront life. This beautiful and serene lodge was inspired by the architecture of the indigenous Samburu tribe and blends into the verdant environment by making full use of native materials. Thatched cabins built using exotic African woods create an escapist atmosphere. The lodge has a spacious swimming pool for cooling down in the heat of the day and a special game-viewing verandah.

It is also one of Kenya’s most protected areas and home to species only found north of the equator, from the reticulated giraffe to Grevy’s zebras and beisa oryxes. A place of endless skies, dust-red plains and palm-fringed rivers, Samburu National Reserve lies on the fringes of the vast and arid desert once known as the Northern Frontier District, whose heat–scorched scrub lands extend all the way to the jade-green waters of Lake Turkana and beyond.

Physically dramatic, the 104 sq kilometer landscape of the Reserve features rocky battlements, craggy scarps, dry river beds and fallen boulders rising out of the thorn scrub against a backdrop of the far-distant hills and the great red table mountain known as Lololokwi.

Day 5: Samburu National Reserve –  Samburu  Lodge

Dawn breaks in golden bands as we start our day in the bush by scanning the river from our tent’s veranda with a cup of steaming coffee in hand. Before the dew is off the grass, we’re off in pursuit of the elephants, lions, leopards, and cheetahs that thrive in the reserve’s grasslands and acacia woodlands.

And so the day is spent in alternating pursuits of exploration in the bush and relaxation in our cozy Lodge.

Day 6: Samburu – Masai Mara Game Reserve – Mara Serena Safari Lodge

This morning we enplane for the Mara, winging west over the dramatic Great Rift Valley to the unspoiled savannah of the Masai Mara where magnificent events await. Here we may savour a Bush Walk with an expert naturalist guide, experiencing the world of the Mara from the ground up— an invigorating opportunity to stretch our legs and be a part of the land.

Or we may try a Hot-Air Balloon Safari. Our accommodations are equally superlative at the Mara Serena Lodge.

The Mara Serena Safari Lodge — is the ultimate safari destination. Set high on a bush-cloaked hill, embraced by arcing vistas and washed by a sea of richly rolling grasslands, it stands center-stage to one of Africa’s most dramatic wildlife arenas and has a ringside seat for the greatest wildlife show on Earth, the legendary migration of the wildebeest.

Drawing its inspiration from the traditional Masai cultural motif of a cluster of domed, mud-colored huts encircled by a “Boma” of brushwood, the Mara Serena offers a rare blend of raw African splendor and sumptuous sophistication.

The essentially ethnic decor also draws on a vibrant color-palette of sun-burst colors, embellished by a unique selection of Masai art to create the look and feel of a traditional bush encampment.

The lodge features individual rooms, each with their own balcony and view of eternity, a sky-blue swimming pool and a spectacular restaurant, overlooking a water hole where a fantasia of creatures collect to drink

Day 7 & Day 8: Masai Mara Game Reserve – Mara Serena Safari Lodge

The search for great predators and perhaps even cubs continues today and tomorrow during extensive game runs. On the plains are enormous herds of grazing animals plus the elusive cheetah and leopard hiding amidst acacia boughs.

We also visit a Masai village and glimpse life so ancient and yet so enduring that it astonishes. The true pinnacle of our journey to the Mara however will be Bush Sundowners—a civilized cocktail party staged in the untamed wilds of Africa.
